But that man was as dead as a man could be, and this was what remained, like when as dead as a man could be, and this was what remained, like when a snake sheds its skin and leaves a dry and brittle husk of itself hanging in the Johnson grass.

When she got mad she could cuss paint o the wall, cuss crows from the trees, cuss the lame straight and the wicked pure. She could cuss Hootie and he would drop what he was doing and run for the woods. When she got really wound up she could talk loud for ten, twelve hours straight. My granddaddy would just bow his head and let it rain over him like hail, or flee.

Instead, he reached down into the water and put both hands on top of the man’s head, and pushed him down, again and again, till there was no need anymore. When the thing was done, my daddy, freezing, crawled back to where he guessed dry ground was, to the shelter, peeled o his wet, freezing gloves and shoved both hands between his legs to warm the numbness away. If there was satisfaction in what he had done, he didn’t say. “I remember he had big eyes,” my daddy said of the man he killed. ” He was done talking then.
